How to commission a portrait drawing?
‘If you are thinking about having a pencil portrait drawn, then let me tell you how easy I make it?’
Five easy steps to a portrait.
1.Photograph.
You send me a photo or photos of the subject/s. I shall give you my expert advice on which photos I think will produce the best portrait drawing. I give more details about photos down below.
2.Size and Medium
Decide on the size of drawing you would like; A3 or A4 and whether you want it drawn in graphite pencil or coloured pencil.
3. Drawing
When you are happy with all the details we have agreed on, then I start drawing.
4. Approval
When I am almost finished I send you a preview so we can discuss the drawing and make any changes before I finish. On completion I send you a scan of the drawing via email for you to approve.
5. Delivery
Once you have approved and I have received payment I send the drawing via recorded delivery
So what makes a good photograph for a portrait drawing?
The better the photograph, the better the drawing!
First of all there are some technical elements that make a photograph good enough to use for a portrait and these are;
The subject/s are in focus.
The image is of a good enough resolution to show details - a phone camera made in the last few years is good enough
The lighting is not too extreme, so avoid sun shining straight into people’s faces
The subject of the portrait should be looking in the direction of the camera and not at their feet or the sky for instance
But what makes a good photograph for a portrait drawing?
This is dictated by whether the photo captures the character of the person or animal and only you the client will know if this is the case. Often we will see photographs of our loved ones and we will say;’ Oh that’s a good photo of them!’ or ‘ No, that doesn’t really look like them.’
So when you are looking through your photos and you come across one that makes your heart warm with love, and it matches the criteria above then that will be a good photograph to use for a portrait.
In an ideal world I will use one photograph to create the portrait drawing but sometimes I need a little help from other similar images. Whether I use them or not it, is very helpful for me to have a few photos to look at as I draw.
How much is a pencil portrait?
A4 Size
A pencil portrait of this size, once framed, looks great on a wall or sitting on top of a living room unit. This size of portrait drawing is ideal for a head and shoulders portrait of one person or animal.
The price for a portrait pencil portrait on this size of paper is £195.00
The price for a coloured pencil portrait in this size is £345.00
These prices are for a single subject.
If you wish to have a portrait drawing with two people or animals there would be an additional charge of £50.
However I would recommend that if you have two or more subjects you consider getting a larger size of portrait, as two people drawn on A4 paper can feel quite cramped even in landscape format.
A3 Size
I prefer to draw on a larger scale, so this is my favourite paper size and also the most popular size with my clients.
An A3 portrait drawing can make a real impact once framed and hung on a wall in your house.
The price for a portrait drawing on A3 size paper is £295.00
The price for a coloured pencil drawing in this size is £495.00
These prices are for a single subject.
If you wish to have a portrait drawing with two or three subjects there would be an additional charge of £50 for animal or person.
Delivery
My finished portrait drawings are safely wrapped in glassine paper ( anti-smudging ) and sent in a lovely presentation box.
I send the finished drawing to you via Royal Mail Recorded Delivery.
The cost for postage and packing is £15 for A4 and £20 for A3 and bigger.
